Sustainability in Architecture is a difficult challenge, and much must be considered to achieve it. To be entirely sure a space is sustainable, all circumstances of how it was created have to be examined: What is it made of, what is it made for and by whom, with what kind of finances and resources, and on whose back and behalf, what was here before, who profits, and who suffers through it? In all this regard, war is by far the most unsustainable way to create space.
In the workshop “Material Whisper” we look at what sustains war and stays useless ever after. We look at the support structures of the leftovers of contemporary war in Ukraine and imagine how these leftovers can be peacefully reanimated. We discuss if something with an unsustainable past can help us at least become climate-neutral today. Furthermore, we will develop an archive of leftovers and start imagining their future roles.
